6. A circular walk to Lastingham Village and Church from Rosedale

The pictures on page 8 illustrate walk number 9 "Lastingham and Spaunton Moor" (8 miles) from the excellent walking guide "Walks on the North York Moors" Book 1 by Jack Keighley.

On this occasion near Bank Top an adder was caught out on open grass land with nowhere to hide!

You can start the walk at bank Top or lower down from Rosedale Abbey itself (or anywhere in between). On this occasion near Bank Top an adder was caught out on open grass land with nowhere to hide!

It was a glorious day looking north up Farndale as we headed upwards and onwards to Spaunton Moor.

On the way back to Rosedale over Spaunton Moor you pass by the tall Ana Cross (Aine Howe Cross) which is a modern replacement of the medieval cross. It is built on a prehistoric bronze age burial mound (the 'howe' or 'tumulus' of Aine How), presumably to show that Christianity was now the new boss!
