The English Lake District - Cumbria, England

 Lake District Index

An extremely beautiful and magnificent walk in March 2010

and a few extra pictures from Borrowdale in Autumn October 2010

Since we were staying near Cockermouth, to walk in Borrowdale, we drove south-east passed Crummock Water and Buttermere over the Honister Pass and down to Seatoller in Borrowdale.

Above: Looking north-west down Honister Pass.

Honister Slate Mine-Quarry at Honister Hause (where this is a YHA Youth Hostel).

Looking east down Honister Pass towards Seatoller - very wild and windswept!

The tiny village of Seatoller. The hamlet of Seatoller has a National Trust car-park (just in view on the left).

Seatoller in Autumn. On the right is the white building of 'The Barn' holiday cottage at Seatoller

In the centre is 'The Barn' (brown door) a good place to stay with good facilities and lovely views out of the window, even in poor weather!

Just north of Seatoller in Autumn

Walking along the banks of the River Derwent towards Longthwaite where the Borrowdale Youth Hostel is.

After the YHA hostel you cross the River Derwent onto the east bank at Peat Howe and head north for Rosthwaite.

Coming down into Rosthwaite over The How.

Sheep and Lambs near Nook Farm, Rosthwaite.

The Flock-in, a walkers Tea-Room Yew Tree Farm. The cafe-tearoom serves delicious snacks and a fine pot of tea!

Ewe-nique! Men-ewe! Ewe are all welcome! (I hope the breach of copyright is forgiven!)

The flat pastures and fields in Borrowdale.

On the left the fells of High Scawdel and High Spy and Castle Crag in the centre.

Kings How on Grange Fell.

After visiting the 'bang your head here' toilet of the Flock-in Tea-Room we headed west back to the River Derwent down a familiar dry-stone walled track.

Heading north on the east bank of the River Derwent to cross to the west bank New Bridge.

View westwards over the River Derwent from within High Hows Wood.

At Low Hows Wood - looking up from the River Derwent to the crags at the northern end of High spy.

Having done a U turn at Low Hows Wood you head south passed the magnificent west face of Castle Crag.

Looking down towards Lake Derwent Water and the Skiddaw mountain range.

Above Seatoller - looking north towards Green Gable (left) and Great Gable (centre) both still holding patches of snow.

Looking west across the Borrowdale valley from above Seatoller.

A close encounter with mountain bikers! Castle Crag on the right.

The sun shines on Grange Fell with its rocky summit of King's How and Castle Crag on the far left.

A last look at Great Gable as the clouds descend and the drizzle begins!

Autumnal descent back into Seatoller, Borrowdale.

One of the most beautiful scenic areas of the Lake District National Park.
