 Chester (2) Street Scenes

A variety of buildings and architectural features

Chester is a great place just to walk around with lots of interesting buildings to view, particularly for those with a keen eye for the local architecture.

Focussing around the central area of Bridge Street, Eastgate Street,

Northgate Street and Watergate Street

 CHESTER INDEX

City of Chester Street Scenes and Buildings: The North Gate higher up on Northgate Street (North Gate Street)

City of Chester Street Scenes and Buildings: Looking up Northgate Street - on the left the pubs-hotels of The Pied Bull (with the arches) and the Red Lion (need white and black facade).

City of Chester Street Scenes and Buildings: 'CITY TOURS' by way of the old motor bus 946 WAE, named the 'Pride of Chester' welcomes you to your nostalgic tour of the historic City of Chester.

City of Chester Street Scenes and Buildings: The Town Hall built in 1869, a large and confident building! In the bottom left corner of the Town Hall is the arched entrance to the 'Tourist Information' centre where you can access some walking tours with excellent guides (and toilets!). On the right of the Town Hall is the Coach House Inn.

City of Chester Street Scenes and Buildings:  (Chester Cathedral is dealt with on separate page)

City of Chester Street Scenes and Buildings: What is now the library (above) was once the WESTMINSTER COACH AND MOTOR CAR WORKS.

City of Chester Street Scenes and Buildings: A modern sculpture in front of the Town Hall, and on the right, to the left of the Town Hall, is small remaining section of the old previous Town hall.

City of Chester Street Scenes and Buildings: In Northgate Street the corner black and white building to the left of the Town Hall is dated 1902, but epitomises the dearth of 'mock Tudor/medieval reproductions' in Chester city centre. It houses 'Mr Simms Olde Sweet Shopper'.

City of Chester Street Scenes and Buildings: The sandstone building of St Peter's Church on the corner of Eastgate Street (left) and the lower end of Northgate Street.

City of Chester Street Scenes and Buildings: Eastgate Street

City of Chester Street Scenes and Buildings: Left: Eastgate Street. Right: The Town Crier' doing is bit for the tourist industry at the Market Cross, the junction of Foregate Street, Eastgate Street and Watergate Street. The shop directly behind him is called OLD GUYS RULE !!! I'm not sure if (to the left) THE VICTORIA pub's sponsorship would approve of such a gregarious performance!

City of Chester Street Scenes and Buildings: Bridge Street - with the shops & retailers of Rohan, Crabtree & Evelyn, Siddalls Optometrists and Beresford Adams. The balustrade of the elevated famous 'rows' can be seen all along the adjoined buildings.

City of Chester Street Scenes and Buildings: The Market Cross at the junction of Foregate Street (to the right), Eastgate Street (down left) and Watergate Street (from where the photograph is taken).

City of Chester Street Scenes and Buildings: In Watergate Street is a Victorian rebuild of a house dating from 1652 and above the 'row' is stated GOD'S PROVIDENCE IS MINE INHERITANCE ! The lower part is called 'The Barista's' coffee shop (Baristas in Watergate).

City of Chester Street Scenes and Buildings: 'The Rows' in Watergate Street, also found in three other of Chester's town centre streets. They date from the medieval era

City of Chester Street Scenes and Buildings: In Watergate Street are some fine 'black and white' buildings.

City of Chester Street Scenes and Buildings: The Edwardian Governor Shopping Centre in Bridge Street, built around 1910.
