67e. The Town of Kenmare, Co. Kerry
The Ring of Kerry - Iveragh Peninsula
SCENES from IRELAND
Visited Kenmare in September 2010
In Kenmare the N71 Ring of Kerry road meets the equally busy N70 Ring of Kerry road - so Kenmare is a very busy bustling pleasant town to visit with its many colourful cafes, pubs, hotels and restaurants to eat and drink in. Its quite a busy town with several tourist routes converging on it. Best to start at the heritage centre ..

The Holy Cross Church, Kenmare
Holy Cross Church, Kenmare is fine looking building in Kenmare.
Holy Cross Church, Kenmare was consecrated in 1864, and features a beautiful interior with ornate chancel, organ and carved roof.

The Prehistoric Kenmare Stone Circle
The Kenmare stone circle is more or less the full circle of stones, and the location is well kept!
The Kenmare stone circle is the biggest of its kind in southwest Ireland.
The Kenmare stone circle may have been orientated towards the sun.
In the centre of the Kenmare stone circle is a boulder burial, a body, or more likely cremated human remains, are buried in a stone lined grave (a cist) and then a large boulder placed on the top.
It is quite an atmospheric place.
A River and an old bridge
The tidal Finnihy River flows through Kenmare.
Cromwell's Bridge is an old medieval bridge that probably has no association with Oliver Cromwell and his invading army!
It has a very exaggerated arch, like many 'packhorse' bridges, possibly because of the high rise of the tides.
The bridge possible dates from the presence in the area of 11th century Augustinian monks.
It is obviously part of an old trackway to and from Kenmare.
