St Benedict's - the tower is a reconstruction of the original Saxon Tower - a nice 'fake'!

The western exit of the Glory Hole of the High Bridge over the River Witham, Lincoln

The Glory Hole is the name given by generations of river users to the High Bridge in Lincoln. It's narrow and crooked arch sets a limit on the size of boats using the Witham and going from Brayford Pool, at the start of Foss Dyke, to Boston and the sea.

"The Glory Hole, Lincoln" oil on canvas by Edmund John Niemann (1813-1876) = looks a lot better these days!

Guildhall Street, top of high street, through the gate to continuing up to 'The Strait' and 'Steep Hill'

The gateway probably  originates as the southern gate of the Roman fort but a new gate was built by 1520.

Above and to the sides of the Stonebow arch are the buildings of Lincoln's Guildhall.

The Cardinal's Hat at the start of "The Strait", the continuance of High Street

A timber framed town house built in the late 15th century as an inn and probably named as a compliment to Cardinal Wolsey, Bishop of Lincoln from 1514 to 1515, restored 1952-1953, it is now a restaurant

Lincoln

The Yak is an independent street clothing shop at the bottom end of The Strait.

The 'overhang' suggests its medieval origins!

Lincoln

On the left of the Cardinal's Hat is Dernstall House, a late 15th century timber framed town house with an open roofed hall on the first floor.

It stands Witham an area known in the Middle Ages as the 'Dernstall', it was reconstructed by Lincoln Civic Trust in 1970.
