Class 66 built 1998-2000 by General Motors/EMD, London, Ontario, Canada (model JT42CWR low emission locos model JT42CWRM). Class 66 diesel powered locomotives have electric transmission, maximum tractive effort of Class 66 locos is 409 kN/92000 lbf, max. speed of Class 66 locomotives is 60/75 mph, weight of Class 66 locos is 127 tonnes. Class 66 locomotives were all originally powered by GM two engines of 2385 kW (3200 hp). Class 66/3, Class 66/4, and some Class 66/5, Class 66/7 and Class 66/9 locomotives have an EMD 2420 kW (3245 hp) engine.
Class 66 are the most common heavy haul freight locomotives you will see on standard gauge British Railways systems maintained by Network Rail or private freight train operators like DRS, D B Schenker (Ex EWS), Colas Rail, GBRf etc. Class 67 diesel electric locos are the most numerous freight locomotives operating on UK railways, running many varied heavy haul, intermodal freight trains in England, Wales and Scotland.

A mineral train of limestone or lime filled wagons from Swinden Quarry in the lovely Yorkshire Dales hauled by Class 66 EWS locomotive 66/0 66 011 (66011 (built-delivered 1998-2000 for EWS)).
Although the Class 66 diesel locomotives haul the limestone trains, the Tarmac Swinden Quarry has its own powerful diesel shunter named 'Cracoe' after the local village nearby (see below). The huge powerful 6w-6wDH diesel hydraulic shunter 'Cracoe' has worked at the Swinden Limeworks near the villages of Rylstone and Cracoe, south of Grassington in the Yorkshire Dales, since it was built for the task in 1994 and is a 2 x 6 wheel drive shunter built by RFS engineering at Doncaster Works.
